Pisa with students - 2016

A lot of people might not know this, but the historic site of Pisa actually is made up of three distinct buildings - the round baptistery, the squared off cathedral, and the leaning tower. I don't always do a good job of photographing all three, so I tried to be cognizant of that on this trip.

Did you know that the tower began leaning almost immediately? Basically, the engineers didn't dig the footers deep enough to support the structure amid the shifting earth. Today, the tower is off by more than a meter from its base to its top; it continues to lean a few more centimeters each year.

Vonda and I each posed for a shot with all three buildings behind us. Sometimes, I only focus on getting a shot with the tower, and that's not really a full pic of Pisa.

If you've ever thought about visiting Pisa, I recommend it. You can see the three structures and do a bit of souvenir shopping with just 2-3 free hours, so it's an easy spot to add to your Italian itinerary.

  1. Oh my gosh Tiffany - I had no idea there were other such beautiful buildings there. Yep, on my bucket list - I need to find a travel buddy. Hubby HATES to travel and plane is even lower on his tolerance level
