  1. When do you do it and why? We already have most of the stuff up. My mom did the main area the first week in November. I will do the finishing touches this week. We do it early since we like the decorations so much we want to enjoy them longer.

How long does it take you? I could say I am never done since I am always creating a new piece to add to the collection all season long.

What is your least favorite part? Taking them down. Our house looks so bare without them.

What is your favorite decorative item? I love them all. I can't pick a favorite one since all of them holds some kind of memory.

When do you take down your decorations and why?

Real tree or fake and why? Both this year. We got some potted Christmas trees this year to go with a new wire tree. We have a big house so you can never have too many trees plus, we have a ton of ornaments.

What color palette do you use - traditional cheery red and kelly green or something else? I usually go towards traditional colors. I am not to crazy over the pink trend.

All the same wrapping paper, a combination, or by family group? A combo, I use whatever we have on hand from previous years. (those sams club rolls go on and on and on.)

One tree or multiple trees? Why? Multiple. Big house and we want more living plants in the house so this solves the problem.

Outdoor decorations? If so, what kind? We sometimes put up just white lights out on some of the bushes.

Clear lights or colored ones? Large or small? Round or bulb shaped vintage ones? Inside it is color and outside clear. The bulbs are just the basic mini bulbs.

Elegant or cutesy or retro or lodge look or some other kind of feel/vibe? I would go with a hodgepodge of styles.

  2. When do you do it and why?
The last few years I've been putting my decorations up the week before Thanksgiving. I've decided that I like to have the work out of the way before all of the holiday chaos begins so that I can enjoy them. Also, it's a lot of work so the longer I have them up, the more it feels worth it to me.

How long does it take you?
Usually about a day to get the house decorated, and a few hours to do the tree.

What is your least favorite part?
The hassle of taking down my everyday decorations, finding somewhere to stash them, and going to the shop and dragging out my holiday boxes, and carting them over to the house. It's a lot of work, and I'm usually exhausted by the time I'm done.

What is your favorite decorative item?
I love it all! I'm a sucker for the lights, so I love having my tree up, and my lighted garlands. I also love our stockings hanging from my mantle.

When do you take down your decorations and why?
I used to take them down the day after Christmas, no exceptions. I decided this made me dread the day after Christmas, and I wanted to take that day to rest. Then, I went to the other extreme for a few years doing it after New Years. I am happiest if I get them down before New Year's Day. Once the New Year starts I don't enjoy them at all, and I just dread having to tackle it.

Real tree or fake and why?
Fake. We started doing a fake tree for my daughter's allergies. Now that I'm used to it I wouldn't go back to real. I love being able to set my tree up as early as I want without worrying about it drying out.

What color palette do you use - traditional cheery red and kelly green or something else?
Mostly reds & golds. Traditional colors for me!

All the same wrapping paper, a combination, or by family group?
I buy a few coordinating rolls every year, and coordinating ribbon. There's no rhyme, or reason to what gift I wrap in what paper, I just try to have some in each paper. If I have a lot of paper left over I'll either use that for stockings, or mix it in with the new paper, but I don't let it go to waste.

One tree or multiple trees? Why?
Just one, mostly because I'm too lazy to do more.

Outdoor decorations? If so, what kind?
I hang some snowflake lights across my front porch, and hang a wreath on my front door. I always think someday I'll do more, but it's never my priority when I'm buying Christmas stuff.

Clear lights or colored ones? Large or small? Round or bulb shaped vintage ones?
I like clear lights best. My tree is prelit with the small bulbs. Outside lights are giant snowflakes.

Elegant or cutesy or retro or lodge look or some other kind of feel/vibe?
I would say a little of everything. Mostly classic/traditional with a hint of rustic here and there, and a few sentimental pieces thrown in.

Good luck on your decorating, I just love this time of the year!!

  3. When do you do it and why?
-I used to take the whole weekend after Thanksgiving & sometimes the next week as well, but I have cut down a lot, in fact, I am considering selling the big tree this year & just making do with the little one I put up in the childcare as we never have presents under either, the husband hates all things Christmas, so there is a lot of grumpiness about my decorating.

How long does it take you?
-oops guess I answered that already. Now it takes me a couple of hours, tops.
What is your least favorite part?
-the undecorating is my least favorite part & what has lead to me cutting down more & more every year.
What is your favorite decorative item?
    -I don't have one.

When do you take down your decorations and why?
-the weekend of New Year's everything Christmas-y is down & all that is left is snowman/winter themed
Real tree or fake and why?
-fake, the only times we've had a real tree it was a nightmare w/the shedding & then the falling over..
What color palette do you use - traditional cheery red and kelly green or something else?
-a combo or traditional red & a burgundy w/dark greens
All the same wrapping paper, a combination, or by family group?
-combo, but things are never displayed, but rather wrapped the day they are going out the door to the celebration.
One tree or multiple trees? Why?
-in years past, 2 one up & one down, the big tree upstairs for us in the big window, the unlit smaller one in the childcare for the kids to have one of their own. This year & the past 2, just the one in the childcare
Outdoor decorations? If so, what kind?
-a wreath & santa that hang on opposite sides of the door. After Christmas, Santa comes down & a snowman goes up

Clear lights or colored ones? Large or small? Round or bulb shaped vintage ones?
-none if the big tree doesn't go up. If it does, its prelit but I can't remember what is on it.
Elegant or cutesy or retro or lodge look or some other kind of feel/vibe?
-combo, because every thing that comes out has a memory behind it.

  4. When do you do it and why?
When I feel like it, which sometimes is...never. This year, I haven't felt inclined to decorate AT ALL.

How long does it take you?
A few hours in one day. After that, anything not pulled out probably won't get pulled out. When I get tired of decorating, I usually quit. (I live alone, so there's nobody to care. If I had kids or people spending the holiday with me, it would be different.)

What is your least favorite part?
Pulling everything out and up the stairs. I usually put a kitchen tree up. It's on the main level. Everything is stored in a walk-in closet on the basement level.

What is your favorite decorative item?
My kitchen tree and ornaments. All the ornaments are, well, kitchen or food related. Some (most) are really, really cute.

When do you take down your decorations and why?
Usually, before January 1st. I like to start the New Year with a clean slate, and that means not having to put away decorations that have been out all of December. This doesn't mean that they haven't gotten put away in January before. But the longer I wait, the more they become part of the scenery and don't get put away till... well, let's not talk about that.

Real tree or fake, and why?
Fake. Because I live alone and it's not fun to buy, lug home, and decorate by myself. Fake trees are easier. I even have a pre-lit one now. And I gave my tall, 6-foot+ tree to my cousin. She has kids (grown...but, still). I love my kitchen tree, and it's the only one I put up now. I do have two kitchen tree centerpieces that go on a table and you can hang ornaments from them (bought at Pier One). I use these trees to hang ornaments that are special that aren't kitchen tree ornaments--like crocheted bells that my grandmother made.

What color palette do you use?
I don't know, Christmasey. I'm not a palette kind of gal--not when it comes to decorating.

All the same wrapping paper, a combination, or a family group?
    A combination.

    One tree, or multiple trees?
One tree, now. The kitchen tree.

    Outdoor decorations?
Just a wreath for the front door. Last year, my cousin's daughter gifted me with a burlap one that she made herself. That will go on the front door this year.

    Clear lights or colored ones?
It was always colored in the past. But now I have just the pre-lit tree, and it's clear ones on that.

Elegant or cutesy or retro or lodge look or some other kind of feel/vibe?
Old-fashioned. Nostalgic. (You can't really call anything I have "elegant".)

So there you go. Not sure if these answers would motivate anybody!

  5. When do you do it and why? usually after Thanksgiving, but I gave into the urging of my 8 year old daughter this year and we decorated the weekend of November 14th/15th. Scandalously early, but as we had travel plans the two following weekends, I came home from Thanksgiving with family and was glad it was done.

How long does it take you? Usually the majority of it gets done over the course of 1 day (tree, nativity, village, outside lights), then I fiddle with the fireplace mantels and vignettes over another day or so until I either like it or give up.

What is your least favorite part? The chaos of 'stuff' everywhere. With kids it's especially challenging as they want to tear into everything right away. This year was better, I was clear with them about one thing at a time and it was more enjoyable (aka less overwhelming and stressful!) for me.

What is your favorite decorative item? a modernized small Christmas tree I have for displaying my grandmother's vintage Christmas ornaments; it sits on my dining room table. I love it because it is simple and meaningful - the essence of what I want this season to be for me.

When do you take down your decorations and why? Typically the first week or so into January. I will leave up seasonal items, but Christmas specific stuff gets pulled; mostly because I'm tired of cleaning around the excess.

Real tree or fake and why? Fake - I love real trees but the ease of fake (don't need to go shopping for one, stands up (we've had some falling over tree situations in the past...), pre-lit, strong branches to hold heavy ornaments) wins for now.

What color palette do you use - traditional cheery red and kelly green or something else? A mix, traditional but not over the top and generally muted colors; the tree is covered in ornaments gathered annually on vacation, so it's a mish mash.

All the same wrapping paper, a combination, or by family group? Combination of wrapping paper, whatever I have on hand; I actually made an effort this year to make it coordinate more, cheerful reds and greens with kraft and gold.

One tree or multiple trees? Why? One main tree and 3 small table top ones (about 2 feet or so) tucked in around the house. One small one displays my grandmother's ornaments, one belonged to my brother (now deceased) and one was given to me by my aunt that my girls got to 'decorate' when they were younger.

Outdoor decorations? If so, what kind? A sprinkling of lights and fake garland along the deck railing. I do love evergreens covered in snow and Christmas lights, but as my girls age and the lights fail, I don't know that I'll replace them - I'd honestlyy prefer an 'old-fashioned' Christmas look of real garland, twigs, and berries, but, for now, I'm OK going along with the family's preferences.

Clear lights or colored ones? Large or small? Round or bulb shaped vintage ones? Colored large ones outside, clear twinkle lights on the tree indoors, colored twinkle lights draped around my daughters' rooms.

Elegant or cutesy or retro or lodge look or some other kind of feel/vibe? I'd say nature inspired (but not rustic) and traditional.

Thanks for the questions - I can see using these at December Daily prompts!

  6. 1. When do you do it and why? -- Our recent tradition is to get the tree the Sunday after Thanksgiving and hopefully decorate it that day or the next. We like to have it up for a long time to enjoy it.

    2. How long does it take you? -- We spent a couple of hours putting up the tree Monday night. We still need to decorate our "archway" that goes from the kitchen into the living room. We usually put up lights around it and I might make a banner of some kind. My sister-in-law brought us a kissing ball and that's hanging outside. My husband needs to replace our outside lights that no longer work, so I'm sure he'll do that soon.

    3. What is your least favorite part? -- Taking it down and carefully packing it away. Booooo.

    4. What is your favorite decorative item? -- A few vintage ornaments that belonged to my grandmothers

    5. When do you take down your decorations and why? -- We often wait until New Year's Day, but might do it a little sooner if the tree is too dried out. We like having the tree up for a long time.

    6. Real tree or fake and why? -- Real tree, because it's our tradition and what our families did when we were growing up. (That being said, I could see opting for artificial in our golden years for the convenience.)

    7. What color palette do you use - traditional cheery red and kelly green or something else? -- Our daughter is still young so we've got everything but the kitchen sink going on. We use white lights on the tree because we like how it looks.

    8. All the same wrapping paper, a combination, or by family group? -- Sometimes might put all of Gabi's gifts in one paper, or all of my parents' in one paper. Usually not that organized, but I like how it looks.

    9. One tree or multiple trees? Why? -- One tree -- we tried having two once, but it was a bit much for our small house.

    10. Outdoor decorations? If so, what kind? -- Small "kissing ball" and probably lights on the roofline if we choose to spend the money to get some new ones. We just got a large tree-shaped candelabra that will look pretty in our front window.

    11. Clear lights or colored ones? Large or small? Round or bulb shaped vintage ones? -- Clear small lights on the tree. Larger ones for outside, probably.

    12. Elegant or cutesy or retro or lodge look or some other kind of feel/vibe? -- Some elegance here and there, lots of cutesy on the tree, since we collect Hallmark ornaments

Lowder Dog said to tell you, "Don't stress about it, Mom. Do it when it feels like fun."
