Need a new routine

I need a new routine.

I used to think that I'd have a perfectly spotless house when I lived alone. No kids, no husband, no one to make a mess. News flash: apparently, I'm the messy one. (Or maybe it's the dogs...)

How do you fit it all into your day? I work, then I'm tired. I want to have fun or just relax instead of clean and organize. I need to make time for exercise. And yard work will begin soon. Plus, I want to be creative, plan, blog, etc. instead of clean. Oh, and I like to sleep - a lot. There just aren't enough hours in the day, it seems. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed here.

When Kelsey was small, I had a housekeeper who came in every couple of weeks for deep cleaning - floors, windows, woodwork, bathrooms, etc. I needed the help then because I had so many responsibilities. At this point in my life, I should be able to get it all done on my own.

I'm considering going back to the 'olden' way of doing things with one specific chore each day of the week. Is there anyone who does this? If so, how do you divide your chores/days? I was thinking something like this:

Monday - laundry
Tuesday - trash/recycling
Wednesday - bathrooms
Thursday - yard work
Friday - bedrooms
Saturday - living areas/kitchen
Sunday - studio space

What do you think? Workable?

Then, the question becomes where do I start, especially since I also have organizing projects that need to be addressed within these cleaning areas. Part of me thinks I need to organize first and then start the new cleaning plan. Maybe that's just my procrastination rearing its ugly head though.

Thoughts? Ideas? I need a new routine for home care or my new podcast will be called 'Hoarding : A How To.'

Peace out! Tiff

  1. Been there. I am single and, as of three years ago, retired, also. My advice: if you can afford it, treat yourself to a housekeeper or maid service. Why not? I'm my case, I hate to clean but I want a clean house. AND I do clean, or at least keep the house picked up, and the maids coming assures I do that because how are they going to be able to do their job amidst a bunch of clutter?

I did reduce the times they come to once a month, as opposed to biweekly.

I know the perceptions--people will think you're lazy. Or they'll make comments like "wish I could afford a maid." I don't care. I have other things I want to do and until I am caught up on them and while I can, I will cut out other expenses before I let go of my maid service. I mean, how much do you spend a month on Scrapbooking supplies or eating out? If I ate all my meals at home, heck, I could have the maid service back biweekly! LOL.

    Just my two cents. :-)

  2. I love the idea for your new podcast, "Hoarding - a How To!" That's a hoot! I like your schedule but for me, personally, I have to only have a few days scheduled for cleaning or I begin to dread my life! That's why my way now is to "get er done" with crazy fast speed cleaning about 30 minutes to 1 hour a day. I do it the moment I come home from working or before I go out or before I go to bed. Or maybe you could just have one night like Tuesday night and knock it all out then. I'm worried if you make such a strict schedule, you'll just dread it, procrastinate it and then not do it. I'm saying that from experience!
