At the pool

Sometimes I think about cancelling my pool membership. I belong to a private family club, and while it's not super expensive, it ain't cheap either. (I only use ain't when it feels culturally or experientially meaningful, btw.) Anyway, I'm really the only one who uses the membership. While Kelsey will go with me a few times a year, it's really just me hanging out by the pool by myself.

Pool selfie - didn't smile because I didn't want everyone to know what I was doing. Hahahaha!

Then there are days like today, when I'm like, "Hell yeah, it's worth the money, every single cent." You see, by going to the pool, I get to get out of the house and see people I know and enjoy summertime without feeling guilty about all the things I need to be doing in my own yard or my own house. It's literally a 3 minute drive from my house to the pool, so I can bop over for just an hour or two and then come home feeling tanned and refreshed and relaxed.

I especially love the pool on days like today - morning, slight breeze, sunshine but not crazy hot, only 3 or 4 people there with me other than the lifeguards. The poolhouse has a very retro feel, and I love that feeling of history. (Did you know my mom was a member here when she was a tiny girl? She used to ride her bike from her house, which is where I live now, to the pool all by herself when she was like 8. There's a major highway now, but back in the day it was all neighborhood roads.)

All in all, I think it's worth it. The pool provides a respite from projects I might have going on at home. It gives me a chance to interact with adults and kids rather than being a hermit all summer. I'm able to 'get my tan on' because of my pool membership. And it really makes me feel like I'm on summer vacay and living a life of leisure. Hey, for all that,  membership fees are indeed a small price to pay.

Here's to you enjoying some water this summer too, whether it's at a lake, river, beach, or pool. I happen to think that sunshine and water are good for the soul.
